Music Monday: Irfan & Stellamara

Two more exploratory ethnic bands I discovered lately, these ones with the hub of their music tilting a wee bit more towards the West, but still concentrating in the area between the shores of the Mediterranean and the Black Sea. The old Hellenistic Empire, in fact – the lands Alexander united, however briefly, starting an amalgamation that, at least in art and music, is still working.

Irfan are a Bulgarian ensemble with a shamefully small discographic presence; only two albums, in 2003 and 2007, although they are still around and touring, to the chagrin of us who can’t make it to concerts and festivals.

Stellamara, on the other hand, are US-based singer Sonja Drakulich and multi-instrumentalist Gari Hegedus. They only have three albums themselves, despite being around since 1994. It’s a pity that lesser but flashier bands get much more exposure since the explosion of world music.
